Lovell's Story

A Memorial Letter From Those of Us From Gary Who Knew Michael Jackson and the Jackson Family (published in the Northwest Indiana Post Tribune, July 3, 2009): It¿s not too much more that can be said of how Michael Jackson¿s music and dancing style impacted our lives at one point or other for generations. Me and my neighbors from Gary, Indiana¿including my 721 strong, 1971 graduating class from Gary Roosevelt¿grew up WITH, ON, and DANCED BY Little Michael and his brothers whom we all connected with. The Jackson parents, like ours, were products of hardworking blacks in Midtown Gary and Northwest Indiana that worked in or connected with the Steel Mills. Even before the Jackson 5 became popular, when a family always practiced music in their home and lived only 2 blocks from you, you knew they were something special. Somewhere along the line of fame and fortune, most of the Jackson Family lost that connection to their roots. Our roots represent our family, our childhood friends, and most importantly, our remembrance and honor of someone that made a sacrifice for our sakes. Many of us have even forgotten the Person that made The Ultimate Sacrifice for us. When you loose connection to your roots you can easily loose your Soul. If there is any ¿lesson to ...Expand for more
be learned¿ for all of us is that in order to know where you are going in life, you must know from whence you came and remember, honor and glorify The Source of your roots. And the best remedy for not forgetting your roots is to keep in regular contact with that Source, and help those who are still in need in your community. This applies to the community of your upbringing and the community where you now live that you can help bring up. Regardless of his chosen lifestyle, Michael Jackson¿s work transcended race barriers. He was the first African American to do so in a major way, worldwide. He was not labeled the King of Soul or the King of Country and Western¿Michael was The King of Music for all races, period. During our lifetime, if there is any ONE earthly thing that will continue to identify and distinguish us from other generations, it is and will always be our connection with Michael Jackson and ¿The Jackson 5 from Gary, Indiana.¿ Please join me in praying that God has mercy on Michael¿s soul, and grant Michael and his family peace in Him. With God¿s grace, anything is possible¿including each of us in a REAL ¿Soul Train¿ dance line doing a Holy Moonwalk with Michael before God¿s Throne! Blessings, The Reverend Dr. Lovell King, Jr.
